It’s hard to top DiGiorno when it comes to frozen pizza, but Amy’s Kitchen comes pretty darn close. Amy’s also has some pretty tasty pizza-themed items in their lineup, including their Swirls and their pizza roll-inspired Snacks. So we were pretty sure we were going to love the Mushroom & Olive Pizza before we even took it out of the box.
If you believe the story on the packaging, this pizza was inspired by Amy’s uncle Billy, who ran a pizza joint. Billy claimed his most popular meatless pizza was the Mushroom & Olives. As a nod to Uncle Bill, the company released its own version of this popular combo.
While we can’t vouch for the factual accuracy of this tale, we can say that the resulting pizza is very good. As soon as it comes out of the oven, you will begin to smell the mushrooms. Most of our staffers love mushrooms, so this was a pleasant discovery.
We let this cook for a few minutes longer than the instructions called for, and the crust came out pretty much perfect. It was crispy on the outside — but not too crisp — and soft on the inside. It tastes great as well. Amy’s has a way with crusts, and the company really shows that off here.
While the mushroom and olive portions are virtually flawless, we would have loved more cheese and just a little bit more sauce. Of course, this pizza still tastes great overall.
One awkward detail about this pizza is that the Nutrition Facts section on the box breaks the pizza into thirds. We’re not sure how we would have split this three ways, since the most natural way to cut it is into eighths, so it would have made more sense to consider a portion either a half or a quarter of the pizza. A third has 260 calories (90 from fat), so if you do the math, the whole pizza has 780 (270 from fat) and a half has 390 (135 from fat). The third looks far more appealing, so we understand why Amy’s Kitchen did this, but it would have been nice if the math were just a little simpler.
We really love Amy’s Mushroom & Olive Pizza. Whether he’s a real person or a fictional character created for the sake of a good story, Uncle Billy certainly knew his stuff.
