Devour Biscuits, Bacon & Creamy Sausage Gravy Review

Devour Biscuits, Bacon & Creamy Sausage Gravy

Devour has long been one of our favorite makers of frozen food. We do have to admit that they’ve had some major misses in their lineup (their dry mac and cheese options are pretty bad), yet almost everything they make is delicious. We especially love their Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese — it’s one of our favorite things we’ve reviewed here.

So every time we find a Devour meal that we haven’t tried, a chorus of angels sings and a ray of light pierces the ceiling to illuminate the freezer aisle in a heavenly glow. Well, not quite, but we do get pretty happy. So you can imagine our joy at the discovery of Devour’s new All Day Breakfast line. These frozen meals are designed to give you diner-style breakfast options that you can enjoy at any time of day.

The first meal from the All Day Breakfast line that we’re trying is the Devour Biscuits, Bacon & Creamy Sausage Gravy.

This meal is meant to be heated in the microwave. It’s fast to cook, but the microwave-only thing made us a little nervous. Heating biscuits in the microwave sounds like it can only be a disaster. However, we trust Devour enough to listen to them on this, so we followed the directions to the letter.

Now, the biscuits don’t come out perfect — they are a bit soggy — but that doesn’t really matter here. These are buried in a delicious gravy, which means they wouldn’t avoid a little sogginess no matter how you cooked them. Even so, they’re not soggy or chewy enough to really ruin the texture — in fact, they still manage to be just a little bit dry on the inside.

This gravy is nothing like what we expected, but it is astonishingly good. We were thinking this would be a savory gravy (the box even suggests this), yet what we found was a sweet, mapley sauce that blew our minds. The sweetness works especially well with the bacon and sausage.

And Deour wasn’t stingy on the meat here. The balls of sausage are pretty small, but this dish is loaded with them, and the bacon bits are larger than we expected. Some frozen meals grind their bacon to almost a powder — Devour chooses to use larger pieces instead, which is a decision we stand behind completely.

One of the major downsides to any of Devour’s frozen meals is that they tend to be pretty high in calories. These biscuits are no exception, with 610 calories (270 from fat) per box. The sodium is pretty wild too, at 1,295 mg. Yikes. If you decide to try this meal, definitely keep that in mind.

The Devour Biscuits, Bacon & Creamy Sausage Gravy frozen breakfast is an incredible introduction to Devour’s All Day Breakfast line. We can’t wait to see what else this line offers, and we definitely hope this ends up being more than just some temporary experiment from Devour. We hope this line has a long and healthy lifespan, and that new items are added to it regularly.
