Archer Farms Crème Brûlée Review

Archer Farms Crème Brûlée

If you spend a lot of time in Target stores, then you’re probably familiar with the Archer Farms brand of foods. This Target-exclusive brand covers a lot of different types of food, and they have a pretty substantial frozen food offering (we enjoy their frozen pizzas from time to time).

Today we’re not reviewing yet another Archer Farms pizza, though. No, instead we’re checking out the Archer Farms Crème Brûlée, which we’ve been curious about for a while now. Frozen crème brûlée is a prospect we just haven’t seen a lot of, despite being in the frozen food review business for several years.

These desserts come two per package, and each comes with a packet of raw sugar. These also are packed into little ceramic dishes that you can wash out and reuse once you’ve enjoyed your crème brûlée. We have to be honest; we were very excited about these ceramic dishes (which are actually called terracotta ramekin). They would be perfect for heating up nacho cheese! We’re already considering picking up a few more of these to get a nice little dish collection going.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. First, we need to taste these. And before we can taste them, we must prepare them.

We have to admit, the preparation instructions for these are quite unusual. You will need to set your oven to broil and heat these on the topmost of racks for just 4-6 minutes — enough time for the sugar to melt and the top of the dessert to start bubbling. We actually ended up heating ours for about nine minutes to make sure we were getting the proper browning effect.

After that, you’ll take them out of the oven and let them cool for ten minutes, then put them into the refrigerator to let them chill for at least ten minutes (and we recommend leaving them in the fridge for longer than that). Yes, you’re going to heat these, then serve them cold.

The first joy of eating crème brûlée is taking a spoon and cracking the top open. If you prepare these correctly, that pleasure will be yours, as the sugar should melt and create a thin, brittle coating over the top of the dessert.

The second joy is the overload of sweetness — the coupling of the sugar topping with the sweet creamy custard beneath it. This dessert satisfies in that regard as well, serving up an extremely sweet dish of decadence. Of course, these might be a little too rich for some — the sweetness becomes overwhelming after a few bites. These are pretty small, though, and the experience ends just before it wears out its welcome.

These are indulgent desserts, so they’re obviously not designed for dieters. Each dish contains 430 calories (280 from fat), and they’re not going to be served as a meal. This means those calories are going on top of whatever you’ve eaten as your main course. Keep that in mind if you decide to pick up a pack of these at your local Target sore.

The Archer Farms Crème Brûlée is a wonderful dessert that will satisfy a sweet tooth. These also come packed with some lovely dinnerware, which you will want to wash out and keep for future cooking adventures. Of course, you probably won’t want to eat these every day, as they’re loaded up with calories and extremely rich. As a once-in-a-while treat, though, these are fantastic.
