The Deep Indian Kitchen brand of frozen food isn’t very old, but we’re huge fans already. See, this actually used to be the Tandoor Chef line, which we adored, but the brand name was changed to Deep Indian Kitchen. Along with the new name came some beautiful package art and some revised versions of old recipes.
We’ve already tried and loved a few of their frozen meals so far, including the Chicken Curry and the Potato & Pea Samosas. Today we’re digging even deeper into the line with the Deep Indian Kitchen Chicken Tikka Masala. We’re quite excited about this, as we adored the Tandoor Chef version.
This is as simple to cook as your standard Lean Cuisine meal. If you’ve ever eaten a microwavable meal before, you know the drill. (If you want to read the cooking instructions straight off the box, check out the package scans at the bottom of this review).
The chicken here is a dream come true. It’s firm, yet it has a soft consistency where it starts to fall apart in your mouth. It’s juicy and satisfying to bite into, and it soaks up the flavor of the sauce really well.
That sauce is a creamy masala sauce with undertones of a coconut sweetness that really drives home the flavor combo. There’s a little bit of spiciness to it, but it shouldn’t surprise anyone who eats a lot of curries and such.
We only have one complaint, and we suppose it’s more of a nitpick than a complaint. There’s more than enough sauce for the chicken, but not enough to cover both the chicken and the rice. If we could change one thing about this meal, it would be to add more sauce. We wouldn’t even add a lot more, just enough to get the rice nice and saucy.
This is just a tad bit higher in calories and sodium than the Tandoor Chef version, with 370 calories (as opposed to 360) and 630 mg of sodium (as opposed to 590 mg). It’s really not enough of a change to make or break the meal, and really, none of those numbers has ever really been all that bad.
The Deep Indian Kitchen Chicken Tikka Masala doesn’t change a whole lot, but it didn’t need to. This is still a fantastic frozen meal that fans of Indian food should really enjoy. We always love returning to the Deep Indian Kitchen brand, and this meal is no exception.
