Heggies Double Cheese Pizza Review

Heggies Double Cheese Pizza

We’re unapologetically Minnesotan here at Freezer Meal Frenzy. Most of our staff grew up in Minnesota (though we do have folks who hail from other states), and our office is located in Minneapolis. Sometimes, we have to use our international reach to showcase local Minnesota classics.

In the past, we’ve checked out local favorites like the Lunds & Byerlys Company Hash Browns and the Nordic Waffles breakfast sandwiches. But today, we’re trying a local staple in the pizza department, Heggies Pizza, a company that is proudly located in Milaca, Minnesota (and it says so right on the package). Some Minnesotans swear by Heggies pizzas, while others aren’t big fans. Personally, we instead go wild for Lotzza Motzza pizzas (another Minnesota classic), but we’re willing to give Heggies a try. It is our job, after all!

So today we’re checking out the Heggies Double Cheese Pizza. Why start with a regular amount of cheese when there’s a double-cheese option?

Cooking this is super simple. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, then toss in the pizza. The package estimates it should take about 11 minutes, but we needed quite a bit longer than that — ours was in for about 16 minutes. We also used a baking sheet, though, so this might have had an impact on the cook time. (To read the full cooking instructions, check out the package scan at the bottom of this review.)

This is a pub-style pizza, which means the crust is thin but not exactly crispy. It does get crispy around the edges, but most of the crust stays nice and chewy. It also has an almost crackery flavor, which is another hallmark of these pub-style pies.

The sauce is a pretty basic tomato paste, with some garlic and spices. It’s not really sweet or spicy, like some of the pizza sauces we’ve tried (Bellatoria tends to go for sweeter while Lotzza Motzza tends to go for spicier). Fortunately, this also doesn’t have that acidic taste that some lower-end pizza sauces get.

But it’s the cheese that really sells us on this pizza. This contains gobs of mozzarella, sprinkled with a little bit of cheddar, and it’s the stuff dreams are made of. Part of this is just how generous the cheese portion is (this is a double cheese pizza, after all), but it’s also due to the fact that the cheddar-and-mozzarella combo is a great one.

According to the package, one quarter of the pizza is a serving. That’s a lot easier to handle than those oddball pizzas that consider 1/5 or 1/6 to be a serving. If you stick with the recommended 1/4, you’ll be gulping down 340 calories and 670 mg of sodium. Of course, we think you’ll probably eat half the pizza as a serving, which brings you up to 680 calories and 1,340 mg of sodium.

The Heggies Double Cheese Pizza is a pretty decent staple of Minnesota freezer aisles. No, this doesn’t dethrone our beloved Lotzza Motzza, but we’re definitely looking forward to trying more from Heggies. They could totally win us over with a good sausage… the ball’s in your court, Heggies!
